When reviewing this data, it’s important to remember that some categories overlap. For example, a suicide death involving a firearm or drugs will appear in both the suicide category and the firearm or drug categories on this dashboard.
Between 2024 and 2025, firearm deaths increased, while both suicide deaths and drug-related deaths decreased. Early data for 2026 suggests that suicide deaths may be increasing again. Firearm-related and suicide deaths most commonly affect white individuals and males, with the highest numbers among men ages 20–39 and 40–69. Overall, males are more affected than females across all age groups for both firearm-related and suicide deaths. Most local firearm deaths are suicides, and firearms remain the most common method of suicide in our county.
Most local drug-related fatalities involve fentanyl or other synthetic opioids. While more white individuals in Oakland County die from drug-related causes in terms of total numbers, Black/African American individuals experience a disproportionately high burden relative to their share of the population.
