Big investments are in the works to bring improved recreational spaces and opportunities to residents across the county. Projects in existing OCP parks include improvements at Catalpa Oaks and Waterford Oaks. Projects that expand the OCP park system via interlocal partnership agreements with local municipalities include Red Oaks Park and Southfield Oaks.
During this period, full and partial park closures are planned and guests are advised to call ahead or check out the latest construction updates below prior to their visit.
While portions of Catalpa Oaks are reopening, work continues on the recreation fields. The fields will remain closed while the new turf becomes established and are expected to open in spring 2027. A formal ribbon-cutting celebration is also planned for spring.
Oakland County Parks will celebrate the grand opening of Red Oaks Park, formerly Ambassador Park, in Madison Heights with a community celebration from 3-5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30. The public is invited to attend the free event.
The celebration will feature a DJ, climbing tower (closed-toe shoes required), giant Connect 4, Jenga and Tetris games, cornhole, tours of the new playground and park tours. Costumes are encouraged; treats will be handed out at stations in the park.
Southfield Oaks Nature Area is being transformed into a nature area with pedestrian pathways that weave throughout the newly restored landscape, gathering/seating areas and trailside interpretive stations that include amenities to relax or play. It is expected to open in 2027.
The new Cattail Cove section of Waterford Oaks County Park will feature an expanded playground, new pavilion and an adult fitness area. This section of the park is currently closed and is slated to reopen in 2027.
Please see the construction map below for details about trails and park areas that are closed or re-routed.
