SOUTHFIELD, Mich. - Today, Oakland County Prosecutor KAREN D. McDONALD charged Zyquis Jaquan Lewis, a 19-year-old resident of Southfield, with Assault with Intent to Murder, Receiving and Concealing a Stolen Firearm, Attempted Carjacking, and two counts of Felony Firearm.

Charges stem from an incident that occurred on September 14, 2023, in an apartment complex in Southfield. It is alleged that the defendant met the victim, who was selling his car online. After test driving the car, the defendant told the victim that he needed to go in his apartment to get money for the purchase. When the defendant reappeared, he instructed the victim not to move, produced a firearm and shot his weapon at the victim multiple times, hitting the victim in his thigh. The victim sustained a non-fatal gunshot wound. Upon executing the search warrant, the stolen weapon used by the defendant was recovered and Lewis was taken into custody by the Southfield Police Department.

“Our entire community is impacted by this kind of violence, and we will hold this defendant accountable and seek justice for the victim” stated Oakland County Prosecutor Karen D. McDonald. “Unfortunately, we all have to be extremely cautious when we meet someone online and then arrange to meet them in person.”

The defendant is expected to be arraigned later today in the 46th District Court.

Assault with Intent to Murder is a felony punishable by life imprisonment or any term of years. Receiving and Concealing a Stolen Firearm is a felony punishable by up to 10 years imprisonment and/or a fine up to $5,000. Attempted Carjacking is a felony offense punishable by life imprisonment or any term of years. Felony Firearm carries a sentence of two years mandatory imprisonment.

Charges are accusations and individuals are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
