PONTIAC, Mich. - On Monday, June 3, 2024, Oakland County Prosecutor KAREN D. McDONALD charged Levi Trahern Smith, a 34-year-old attorney and resident of Dearborn Heights, with Attempted Home Invasion First Degree and Felony Firearm.

Charges stem from an incident that occurred at approximately 1:30 am on June 1, 2024, in Royal Oak. The victim called 911 after noticing an unidentified man allegedly lurking outside her home and attempting to enter through the side door. The defendant was captured on the home's Ring doorbell. Police located the individual carrying a backpack that contained a number of concerning items including a loaded handgun, a large knife, handcuffs, rope, masks, a hammer, a crowbar, duct tape, latex gloves, and other items. The defendant was taken into custody by law enforcement.

"I am relieved that the victim was vigilant and contacted law enforcement immediately," stated Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald. "Without the victim's call to 911 and the work of the Royal Oak Police Department, this situation could have been far worse."

"The quick thinking of the victim to contact police once she realized this dangerous situation was unfolding prevented a much worse outcome. As a result, the officers immediately located the suspect and took him into custody," stated Royal Oak Police Chief Michael Moore.

The defendant was arraigned on June 4, 2024, in the 44th District Court before Magistrate William Urich. Bond was set at $25,000 cash/surety. A Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for June 14, 2024, at 10:16 am before Judge Andrew Kowalkowski.

Attempted Home Invasion First Degree is a felony punishable by up to 5 years imprisonment. Felony Firearm carries a sentence of two years mandatory imprisonment.

Charges are accusations and individuals are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
