Arizona Man Arraigned on Charges in Connection with Sexual Assault while in Michigan for Work Conference

PONTIAC, Mich. - On Thursday, September 5, 2024, defendant Joel Delavara, a 36-year-old resident of Yuma, Arizona, was arraigned in the 52-3rd District Court before Magistrate Marie Soma on charges related to an alleged sexual assault. The Court set bond at $100,000 with a 10% provision, which was posted.
The Oakland County Prosecutor's Office issued charges against defendant Delavara on Friday, August 16, 2024, including 1st Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct, 2nd Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct, and 1st Degree Home Invasion. These charges stem from an incident that took place the evening of August 14, 2024, in Auburn Hills. The victim was staying as a guest in a local hotel. It is alleged that the defendant had a copy made of the victim's hotel room key, gained access to her room, and sexually assaulted her before abruptly flying back to Arizona. The victim reported the attack to law enforcement and charges were issued.
"The impact of rape on a victim and our community is immense," stated Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald. "This case will be handled by my office's Special Victims Unit (SVU), which is dedicated to prosecuting violent sex offenders and getting justice for victims. We will hold perpetrators fully accountable under the law."
1st Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct is a felony punishable by life imprisonment or any term of years and requires mandatory lifetime electronic monitoring, mandatory AIDS/STD testing, and requires DNA to be taken upon arrest. 2nd Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct is a felony punishable by 15 years imprisonment and requires mandatory AIDS/STD testing and SNA to be taken upon arrest. 1st Degree Home Invasion is a felony punishable by 20 years imprisonment and/or a fine up to $5,000.
A Probable Cause Conference is set for September 19, 2024, at 8:30 am. A Preliminary Examination is set for September 26, 2024, at 8:30 am. Both hearings are scheduled before Judge Lisa Asadoorian.
Charges are accusations and individuals are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
