Catalpa Oaks

Catalpa Oaks is partially open following construction that has transformed the park with expanded recreation opportunities, improved accessibility and new green infrastructure. Improvements include:

An expanded universally accessible playground
Improved accessible pathways
Shaded gathering and seating areas
An accessible plaza
A second picnic pavilion
New outdoor fitness equipment
Paved parking lot
Upgrades to recreation fields and green stormwater infrastructure

While portions of Catalpa Oaks are reopening, work continues on the recreation fields. The fields will remain closed while the new turf becomes established and are expected to open in spring 2027. A formal ribbon-cutting celebration is also planned for spring.

Pavilion Rentals

The Vincent Gregory Pavilion and new second pavilion will be available for 2027 events. The reservation process will open in early spring.

Catalpa Oaks preserves 24 acres of green space in Southfield adjacent to the South Oakland Health Department. Catalpa Oaks features one youth and four large soccer fields which are expected to open in spring 2027. Its new outdoor fitness equipment is perfect for for classes and informal exercising, providing a full-body workout to adults of all abilities. The playgrounds include accessible pathways and a universally-accessible playscape and swings for all abilities. A .8-mile aggregate perimeter pathway around the park provides a walking and running loop. Shaded seating areas provide spaces to gather. The Vincent Gregory Pavilion offers picnic table seating for 100 people. A second pavilion will be available in 2027. Modern restrooms are on site and open daily April through October and there is a paved parking lot.
