4-H Horse Orienteering
This 4-H Horse Orienteering event is a fun, interactive program open to 4-H youth and their families from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20 at Rose Oaks County Park Nature Area. Combining a traditional orienteering course with horsemanship, register today to see who can use their map, compass and horsemanship skills to find a series of checkpoints in the woods the fastest.
Youth and families will move at their own pace through the park as they practice navigation skills, basic horsemanship skills and teamwork. This low-pressure, outdoor event is designed to build confidence, problem-solving skills and family engagement while maximizing time outside with horses and horse friends. No orienteering experience is needed.
Cost is $5. Riders must have at least one partner or a small group, no one rides alone. Youth under age 15 must be accompanied by an adult. You only need to register one rider from the group. Please carpool horses if possible as parking at the trail head is limited.

Trailblazers Hiking Series
Join Oakland County Parks staff for informative, scenic hikes during the TrailBlazers Hiking Series from 6-7 p.m. at Rose Oaks County Park Nature Area. This four-month hiking series offers a chance to stretch your legs on a one-hour guided hike covering these topics.
- July 8 - The Wood Wide Web. Trees use networks of mycelia to communicate. Find out how and why this helps the forest community
- Aug. 12 - Native, Naturalized, Invasive. Learn the history of Michigan’s introduced plants - how did they get here? Who brought them? Why were they brought? Which ones are harmful to native species and which ones have become naturalized during their time here?
- Sept. 9 - Fly Away Home. Birds, butterflies and bats are set to make their way south. Find out why some species leave while others stay
- Oct. 7 - Fall Color Tour. Enjoy the fall splendor and discover the science behind why leaves change colors
The TrailBlazer Hiking Series is an affordable, enjoyable way to squeeze fitness into your busy schedule by being able to socialize, get in your steps and learn new facts about the natural world all in one exciting hour-long program. Hike with a friend or meet new people on the trails.
Hikers should dress for the weather and bring a water bottle and bug spray.

Archery Hunting
Archery hunting for white-tailed deer (with some limitations) is allowed in this park, hunting locations and rules are listed in the individual park archery maps. No parks allow firearm hunting.

About
Several glacier lakes within Rose Oaks Nature Park provide contrast to the gently rolling open meadows and wooded uplands. This 649-acre undeveloped park is a favorite of equestrians who explore its five miles of trails including accessible boardwalks and floating docks, which are also shared by hikers, cyclists, geocachers and cross-country skiers. Fishing is permitted and non-motorized boats and electric motor boats are allowed; carry-in only. General parking is located on Buckhorn Lake Road; equestrian parking is at the Fish Lake Road lot.
